The Roero

The Origins

An area already inhabited in Roman times, due to the flourishing viticulture planted here, the Roero is, however, a land divided among the different factions operating in Piedmont in the Middle Ages.

The Aleramici, who clashed with the troops of Asti and Alexandria in these lands, owned a number of castles scattered on fortresses. The Aleramic branch of the Marquises of Saluzzo also had outposts in the area.

The history of the Roero is connected with the history of the Asti Casane who ruled over these fortresses and imposed their name on this territory. Within these casane, particular influence had the family that gave the area its name, the Roero family.
